Day job

May 24, 2007 at 11:15 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

From what I can see, none of the Professional Organisers in
Durban are doing it full time – we all have day jobs.  My current day job contract is up at the end of August, but I have nowhere near the demand for my services that I would need to quit and do organising full time.  It is interesting to see that in Jo’burg and
Cape Town that does not seem to be the case.  Something to follow-up on when I am at the 1st Annual Professional Organiser’s Conference in
Cape Town in August.

Being your own boss

Had a call today from a lady I used to work with in the Training department of a large corporate.  She left the business to go on maternity, then returned briefly after having her baby, before deciding leave the business permanently.  She seemed excited to hear that I was also branching out on my own.

Storage containers

Was talking to a friend who spent quite a bit of time working in
London and she was telling me about a shop she used to go to which sold every kind of storage container you can think of.  Boxes in all different shapes, colours, and sizes.  I am having trouble sourcing storage items in Durban (
South Africa).  If you live in
Durban, are browsing my blog, and know of such a place (or are planning to open one!) please drop me an email with the details: organiserj@gmail.com

Header

You’ll notice that there is a new header on my website.  This is to more closely match my business cards which arrived yesterday.  I also spent some time yesterday trying out the different options on my new labelling machine.  I’m mostly very happy – just trying to figure out a way to have all the labels the same length, without having to cut them manually.  When I specify a length, it simply prints two dots to show me where to cut, instead of printing the whole label the length I requested.  Annoying!

Labelling machine continued…

Well, my labelling machine was delivered today as promised.  I can’t wait to spend some time experimenting with the different printing options.  I think I will create a little portfolio of examples of what it can do…

Business cards

My brother has a contact at a print shop, so we went across on Friday to order some business cards.  We gave Nick at Copy Katz the information that we wanted to be shown on the card and he spent some time creating different format and layout options.  The final choice looks a lot better than the draft copy I had created on my own.  Nothing like getting the expertise of a specialist!

My new labelling machine

Just did an internet transfer to pay for my new labelling machine.  In “Getting Things Done” the author David Allen recommends getting a Brother labeller and I am pleased to announce that I have found a distributor in
South Africa.  Mine should arrive on Monday!
